Top Ten Words/Topics That Instantly Make Me Buy/Pick Up A Book

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. I'd love to here what made it on your list, just leave me a comment and I'll visit and find out!

Ok so I have to admit, I'm a bit of a lazy reader so this topic is perfect for me, there are definitely topics or words, even colours, that will make me pick up a book. Those words or topics are ALWAYS things that make me pick up and book and a lot of the books on my shelf, actually MOST of the books on my shelf have these topics in common...

1. Love. I think this will feature on a lot of lists. I'm not that attracted to your classic slushy romance, I like the kind of love you find in a rom com or the kind of love with an interesting twist or difference...

2. Babies. Looking at the list of books I have read there are a lot of them that feature people who are pregnant or have a baby (my favourites of these being The Yorkshire Pudding Club by Milly Johnson or The Baby Group by Rowan Coleman). I've never had a baby and don't plan on being pregnant any time soon but seems to be a topic I love to read about.

3. New York. I love, love LOVE books set in New York, that is definitely something that will make me pick up a book and hook me in straight away!

4. Shopping. I'm a big shopaholic and so when a book comes along like Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella or The Personal Shopper by Carmen Reid, I get very excited. It's nice to hear that my shopping habit isn't as bad as I might think...

5. London. As much as I like books set in the states, I also love books set in our capital city, always have done and event now I live there, I still enjoy when a book comes out set in London. I was very excited when I heard that Lindsey Kelk was releasing I Heart London (even more excited when she singed my copy for me and complimented my dress!)

6. Christmas. I'm a big fan of Christmas anyway, as well as the fact that its my birthday that time of year too, and so I love books set at Christmas. Scarlet Baileys books set at this time of year are fabulous and this year I really enjoyed Christmas at the Cupcake Cafe by Jenny Colgan.

7 Cake. Jenny Colgan's book leads me nicely onto the next topic that will ALWAYS make me pick up a book, cake (or food in general really) Jenny Colgan's Meet Me at The Cupcake Cafe was excellent and The Secret Supper Club by Dana Bate are two of my favourite foodie books.

8. America. This is a separate category from New York because I really like to read travel books about America, not necessarily fiction books, travel writing like Bill Bryson's Notes From a Big Country.

9. Reality. I don't mean that I necessarily like books that explore every grim aspect of being a human but books with too much magic/mysticism/fantasy in them just aren't for me. I like books about people getting married, or growing up, or having a baby-real life things that people do. That leads me onto my final topic that will instantly make me pick up a book...

10. Books about me! Not literally me, but books about twenty-something girls who struggle with their career, struggle finding a boyfriend, struggle with making decisions but still have fun along the way. I am a lazy reader, I have said this before and although I am loathed to admit it, I really am! I like a book that features a girl like me doing the same kind of things that I do. I like them to live in a real setting, either one I have lived in, or one I can fantasise about living in. I am lucky that the majority of the books written in the 'Women's fiction' genre are about women in their late twenties/early thirties because I genuinely find books featuring much older or younger characters or completely made up settings, really hard to get into at first!

So there you have it. This list really made me think about my reading habits. I would love to know what makes others pick up a book, so leave me a comment and let me know!
