Top Ten Tuesday: Short/Serialised Books 17/4/18

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

I hope you enjoy this list, I know sometimes I just need to read a short book or an episode in a seriaised novel between longer books or if I've been reading the same genre for a while so I thought why not do a list featuring these books?!

Rosa Larkin is down on her luck in London, so when she inherits a near-derelict corner shop in a quaint Devon village, her first thought is to sell it for cash and sort out her life. But nothing is straightforward about this legacy.  While the identity of her benefactor remains a mystery, he - or she - has left one important legal proviso: that the shop cannot be sold, only passed on to somebody who really deserves it.
Rosa makes up her mind to give it a go: to put everything she has into getting the shop up and running again in the small seaside community of Cockleberry Bay. But can she do it all on her own? And if not, who will help her succeed - and who among the following will work secretly to see her fail?
There is a handsome rugby player, a sexy plumber, a charlatan reporter and a selection of meddling locals. Add in a hit and run incident and the disappearance of a valuable engraved necklace – and what you get is a journey of self-discovery and unpredictable events.
With surprising and heartfelt results, Rosa, accompanied at all times by her little sausage dog Hot, will slowly unravel the shadowy secrets of the inheritance, and also bring her own, long-hidden heritage into the light.

Cover Reveal: The PIcture by Roger Bray

I've got another cover reveal for you today, always an exciting time. Here's what The Picture by is all about...
A warehouse in Japan used as an emergency shelter in the aftermath of the 2011 Tsunami. A distraught, young Japanese woman in dishevelled clothes sits on a box, holding her infant daughter. Ben, a US rescue volunteer, kneels in front of her offering comfort. They hug, the baby between them. The moment turns into an hour as the woman sobs into his shoulder; mourning the loss of her husband, her home, the life she knew. A picture is taken, capturing the moment. It becomes a symbol; of help freely given and of the hope of the survivors. The faces in the picture cannot be recognised, and that is how Ben likes it. No celebrity, thanks not required.
But others believe that being identified as the person in the picture is their path to fame and fortune. Ben stands, unknowingly, in their way, but nothing a contract killing cannot fix.

Are you ready for the cover?

And here's a bit more information about Roger Bray, including his social media links and link to his Amazon author page for further information about the book...

Author Bio –  I have always loved writing; putting words onto a page and bringing characters to life. I can almost feel myself becoming immersed into their lives, living with their fears and triumphs. Thus, my writing process becomes an endless series of questions. What would she or he do, how would they react, is this in keeping with their character? Strange as it sounds, I don’t like leaving characters in cliffhanging situations without giving them an ending, whichever way it develops.
My life to date is what compels me to seek a just outcome, the good will overcome and the bad will be punished. More though, I tend to see my characters as everyday people in extraordinary circumstances, but in which we may all find our selves if the planets align wrongly or for whatever reason you might consider.

Of course, most novels are autobiographical in some way. You must draw on your own experiences of life and from events you have experienced to get the inspiration. My life has been an endless adventure. Serving in the Navy, fighting in wars, serving as a Police officer and the experiences each one of those have brought have all drawn me to this point, but it was a downside to my police service that was the catalyst for my writing.

Medically retired after being seriously injured while protecting a woman in a domestic violence situation I then experienced the other side of life. Depression and rejection. Giving truth to the oft said saying that when one door closes another opens I pulled myself up and enrolled in college gaining bachelor and master degrees, for my own development rather than any professional need. The process of learning, of getting words down onto the page again relit my passion for writing in a way that I hadn’t felt since high school.

So here we are, two books published and another on track.

Where it will take me I have no idea but I am going to enjoy getting there and if my writing can bring some small pleasure into people’s lives along the way, then I consider that I will have succeeded in life.

Guest Review: Date With Mystery by Julia Chapman

Date with Mystery is the third novel in Julia Chapman's Dales Detective series. So remember there may be spoilers for parts 1 and 2 in this review!
The Dales Detective Agency’s latest assignment appears to be an open and shut case. Hired by a local solicitor to find a death certificate for a young woman who died over twenty years ago, Samson O’Brien is about to find out that things in Bruncliffe are rarely that straightforward. Particularly when the solicitor insists that Delilah Metcalfe, with her wealth of local knowledge, works alongside Samson on this sensitive investigation.
Delilah is eager to help. At the very least, the case will take her mind off the looming custody battle for her precious dog, Tolpuddle, and the threat of the bank foreclosing on her struggling Dales Dating Agency.
As Samson and Delilah begin their inquiries they soon become embroiled in a mystery that has lain at the heart of the town for decades. But in uncovering the truth have they exposed secrets that some would prefer remained buried?

Review: This is the third book in the Dales Detective series by the lovely Julia Chapman. The series is set in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and includes some snapshots of the striking scenery there and examples of the local characters. These books have the most attractive covers, with little clues of what is going on within the pages.

In Date with Mystery, the story once again revolves around Delilah Metcalfe and Samson O'Brien, proprietors of the Dales Dating Agency and the Dales Detective Agency, respectively.  Their offices are situated in the small town of Bruncliffe. Although primarily involved with her dating agency and web design businesses, Delilah, and her faithful canine companion, Tolpuddle the Weimaraner, can't help getting involved in Samson's investigations, much to his irritation. The duo find themselves immersed in the puzzle of a missing death certificate for a local young woman who died many years ago. As they delve deeper into the mystery, more and more secrets come to light, but it seems that their attention is not welcomed by everyone. The investigation could prove more dangerous than it looked on the surface.

I have enjoyed all of the books in this series. They are well written, with an entertaining mix of serious crime investigation and more light hearted goings on in the town and surrounding area. As in this third book, the suspense is always maintained right to the end. In addition to the mystery, there is the continuing and developing relationship between Delilah and Samson; will they get together in more than a professional way? I'm already looking forward to the next instalment.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Loved But Will Never Re-Read! 10/4/18

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Well never say never but I am unlikely to read so many of the books that I have loved. However I have been managing to re-read some of the books I've loved before in my challenge of trying to re-read a book a month (I started in February since I didn't manage it in January!) so these I will probably not re-read unless they're made into a film or something...

I loved all of these books, I just want to reiterate that!

Review: Two Steps Forward by Graeme Simsion and Anne Buist

A smart and funny story from the author of The Rosie Project - two misfits walk 2,000 km along the Camino to find themselves and, perhaps, each other. A novel of second chances and reinvention from Graeme Simsion, and his wife Anne Buist. Optioned for film.
Zoe, a sometime artist, is from California. Martin, an engineer, is from Yorkshire. Both have ended up in picturesque Cluny, in central France. Both are struggling to come to terms with their recent past - for Zoe, the death of her husband; for Martin, a messy divorce.
Looking to make a new start, each sets out alone to walk two thousand kilometres from Cluny to Santiago de Compostela, in northwestern Spain, in the footsteps of pilgrims who have walked the Camino (the Way) for centuries. The Camino changes you, it's said. It's a chance to find a new version of yourself, and a new beginning. But can these two very different people find themselves? Will they find each other?
In this smart, funny and romantic journey, Martin's and Zoe's stories are told in alternating chapters by husband-and-wife team Graeme Simsion and Anne Buist. Two Steps Forward is a novel about renewal - physical, psychological and spiritual. It's about the challenge of walking a long distance and of working out where you are going. And it's about what you decide to keep, what you choose to leave behind and what you rediscover along the way.
Optioned by Fox Searchlight for Ellen DeGeneres to produce through A Very Good Production

Review: This book brings to mind a cross between Wild and When Harry Met Sally. The fact that this is written by two authors, two authors who are married really intrigued me to begin with, and the fact that this is already well on the way to becoming a film also makes me see it in a different light. Altogether this was a very different reading experience but a pleasurable one nonetheless!

This is dual narrative and I actually bought this one and listened to it on audiobook which meant that the dual narrative was even more pronounced. I am such a fan of dual narrative and it works really well with this story, especially since it was written by two different authors. I think the fact that is is dual narrative means that you get to know the characters a little deeper and you feel more sympathy/empathy with them sooner into the book as well.

I learned a lot about the Camino in this book and it has definitely piqued my interest in the areas. The great thing about the setting is that it is new to both of these characters as well since we have someone from Yorkshire (like me, woo!) and someone from California. As the blurb suggests, there are lots of challenges along the way and i think because, we the reader, are seeing this through fresh eyes, we feel those challenges more deeply as well.

The characters are both at a slightly later stage in life to me but I still found them easy to identify with and championed them throughout the walk. I could relate to what they were going through not because I've been through it but because they are well-developed likable characters who were easy to get along with. You don't have to have read anything by these authors before to enjoy this story, nor do you have to have an knowledge of The Camino. This book was unique, enjoyable and challenging in parts and I can't wait to see what becomes of it in the future!

Review: Clean by Juno Dawson

A razor-sharp, adrenaline rush of a novel from award-winning author Juno Dawson, Clean is Gossip Girl meets Girl, Interrupted.
'I can feel it swimming through my veins like glitter ... it's liquid gold.'
When socialite Lexi Volkov almost overdoses, she thinks she's hit rock bottom.
She's wrong. Rock bottom is when she's forced into an exclusive rehab facility.
From there, the only way is up for Lexi and her fellow inmates, including the mysterious Brady.
As she faces her demons, Lexi realises love is the most powerful drug of all ...

It's a dirty business getting clean ...

Review: Ok this review comes with a lot of trigger warnings so make sure you read the synopsis before deciding whether this book is for you. But I will tell you that this book was definitely for me. I loved this book. The premise behind it sounds like it is going to be a usual story of addiction and recovery but this novel is so much more clever than that. I am actually in awe of how this author managed to come up with this plot line and its twists and turns, I don't think I could write something so intricately crafted.

Lexi as a character is a little hard to get on with but she challenges the reader throughout the book and she had definitely grown on me but the end of the novel. As the synopsis might suggest, she is entitled and selfish and so she makes for great reading material. The journey that she goes on over the course of the book, all its ups and downs is gruelling and so i did definitely sympathise with her throughout MOST of the story. There are also some other really interesting and diverse characters in this book, some of which I would LOVE to read more about, so if there are any spin offs planned-count me in!

Of course this book deals with a range of issues and some of the drug taking and the recovery process from that is quite graphic. It put me in mind of Trainspotting in parts but I really feel like I have learned something after finishing this book having never been part of the world that Lexi is part of. It was eye opening, compelling and educating. It was entertaining and definitely a page turner. If this book sounds like it is something you are in a space to read at this moment in time then I definitely recommend it and I can't wait to see what Juno Dawson comes up with next!
