Guest Review: Tuffers' Cricket Hall of Fame By Phil Tufnell

It's time for another sport/history guest review Sunday-how exciting!

Phil Tufnell, cricket legend and national treasure, has populated his very own Cricket Hall of Fame with a deliciously eclectic collection of cricket legends and offbeat characters, with joyful results.
From boyhood heroes, to legendary team-mates, to fearsome opponents, to idiosyncratic umpires and broadcasters, Tuffers has gathered together the most enchanting cast of cricketing figures every assembled.
And it wouldn't be a Tuffers tome if there weren't a number of captivating appearances from some unexpected quarters, including some genuinely off-the-wall, non-cricketing inductees to keep life interesting in this very personal Hall of Fame.

Review: Phil Tufnell is a former cricketer who played for Middlesex and England. Following his retirement from professional cricket in 2002, he has become a popular television and radio personality, winning "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here" in 2003 and is currently a team captain on "A Question of Sport" and a regular summariser on radio's "Test Match Special".

This book is his personal collection of the various characters in cricket that have caught his imagination and deserve to be included in his hall of fame. It is not just legendary players that are included, but also umpires and commentators (although several of these are drawn from the ranks of former players). Some of the reasons for inclusion are unusual and, in some cases, downright eccentric, but this adds to the entertainment value of the book.

His playing career spanned the latter part of the 20th century, so the list of characters included in the book tends to be skewed towards the cricketers he played with or against, but some legends from earlier periods are included. One omission that does stand out is that no women are included. Notwithstanding this, the book is written in the author's inimitable, witty style, and I found it a most enjoyable read.
