Jackson Birkman has the perfect life: the lead role on the popular detective show "Dispatching David," millions of adoring fans, celebrity status, and a beautiful girlfriend. After five seasons, "Dispatching David" has just been cancelled. With the final episode quickly approaching, Jackson is worried about more than just his future acting career. His once massive fortune is dwindling and his girlfriend Clara is pressuring him to propose.
When Jackson unexpectedly dies on the set of the TV show during filming, everyone speculates whether it was suicide or murder. Why would Jackson commit suicide? If it was a setup, who would want Jackson to die? And most importantly, what was the motive of the murderer? As the investigation continues, Officer Wilson inches closer to the truth, uncovering Jackson's secrets. She begins to think no one really knew Jackson at all, but is determined to solve the case, no matter the cost.
Are you Ready for that interview?
First question-bit of a cliche-how did you get into writing?
When
I was 8, I read Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
I was in awe of the magical world and characters JK Rowling created
and wanted to create my own world. I began writing short stories when
I was 8, which progressed into poems and plays as I got older, and
eventually my novel.
Do you write full time & if so,
have you always done this?
No,
writing is my side hustle. I work full-time as the Content Manager
for a start-up company, but my goal is to write full-time someday.
Do you have a particular writing style
or genre that you prefer to write?
The
Long Shadow on the Stage is
my first novel, so I think I’m still developing my writing style.
But it’s a psychological thriller novel and I definitely think I
will stick to the thriller/mystery genres.
How do you develop your characters as
you write, are any of them based on real people?
None
of my characters are based on real people. As I’m writing, I create
character profiles with each character’s physical characteristics,
personality traits, habits, background, etc.
What was the inspiration behind your
book?
I
was thinking about what would happen in the aftermath of an actor
mysteriously dying on the set of a TV show. The idea stuck with me
for awhile until I finally decided to write The
Long Shadow on the Stage.
What is your writing process-do you
plan it out first? Write a bit at a time?
As
an author who just wrote her debut novel, I’m still refining my
process. I tend to be more of a “Pantser,” so I don’t plan out
much of the story in advance. For the first draft, I start writing
and see where the story takes me, which usually results in the first
draft being a rough outline for me to follow.
How much of you is reflected in your
writing?
There
is probably an unintentional small piece of me in all my characters,
whether it is personality traits I have, habits, etc.
What kind of research did you have to
do before/during writing behind your book?
Without
giving too much away, I had to do some research for a few parts of my
novel to make sure certain scenes and scenarios were realistic and
factual. This involved scouring Google for reputable resources to
fact check my writing.
This
is my first novel, so I don’t have any reviews yet! I’m sure I
will be paying attention to them at first though.
Are friends and family supportive of
your writing?
Absolutely!
My family and friends are amazing and have always supported my
writing. My husband is the one who pushed me to finally finish and
self-publish The
Long Shadow on the Stage.
How do you feel leading up to your
publication day?
I’m
currently feeling excited, anxious, terrified, and extremely proud of
myself. I can’t wait for The
Long Shadow of the Stage to
be available for thriller fans to read and (hopefully) enjoy!
Which other authors inspire you or are
there any you particularly enjoy reading?
My
favorite authors are Stephen King, JK Rowling, John Green, and Edgar
Allan Poe.
Finally...what are you working on right
now?
Right
now, I’m focusing on marketing and promoting The
Long Shadow on the Stage,
but I will have an announcement after release day for my next novel,
so stay tuned!

Nichole Heydenburg earned her Bachelor’s Degree in English with an emphasis in writing and a minor in theatre from Adrian College in 2014. Her one act play “The Hidden Story” won a playwriting contest and was performed at her alma mater in 2015. She also had several poems published in “The Oxcart” literary magazine. Nichole has been working full-time as the Content Manager for a start-up company for 3 years. When she isn’t writing, Nichole enjoys going on adventures with her husband, reading, playing board games, and the occasional mimosa. “The Long Shadow on the Stage” is her first novel. She currently resides near Asheville, NC with her husband, Zed.
